Why We Don’t Accept Insurance

At Gold Soul Optometry we made a deliberate choice to stay out-of-network with a self-pay model.

The reimbursement rates offered in this area (often well under 50% of our fee) do not support the unhurried, doctor-performed exams we believe every patient deserves. Insurance contracts also prohibit balance billing, which would make our level of care unsustainable for an independent practice.

What this means for you:

  • Transparent upfront pricing with no surprises

  • Full exam performed entirely by the doctor (no techs or remote readers)

  • Time to listen to your concerns and answer every question

  • Honest recommendations with prescriptions you can fill anywhere

  • Much shorter wait times — While many in-network doctors in the Permian Basin are booked out 1–2+ months for routine exams, we can usually get you in within days (often same or next week)

You pay at the time of service. We provide a detailed itemized receipt/superbill that you can submit to your insurance for any out-of-network benefits you may have. Many patients receive partial reimbursement.

Payment Options:

  • Credit card, cash, or check

  • HSA / FSA accepted

  • Itemized superbill for insurance reimbursement (if applicable)

We’re happy to answer any questions about your specific plan when you call or book.

How to Check Your Out-of-Network (OON) Benefits

We want to make this as easy as possible for you. Here’s exactly how to find out what your insurance may reimburse:

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Gather your insurance information Have your vision insurance card (VSP, EyeMed, etc.) and your medical insurance card ready.

  2. Call your insurance company (or log into their member portal/app) Call the customer service number on the back of your card.

  3. Ask these exact questions:

    • “Do I have out-of-network benefits for routine vision exams?”

    • “What is the reimbursement for a comprehensive eye exam (CPT code 92004 or 92014)?”

    • “What is the reimbursement for contact lens fitting (CPT code 92310)?”

    • “Is there an annual deductible or maximum I need to meet first?”

    • “How do I submit a claim? Can I do it online or do I need to mail it?”

  4. Write down the answers Ask them to email you a summary if possible.

Quick Tip: Many patients in the Permian Basin are surprised to learn they do have decent out-of-network coverage even if they can’t use it at most offices.

Once you know your benefits, we’ll provide a professional superbill after your visit that you can submit directly to your plan.

Meet Dr. Edwin Y. Endo, OD Independent Doctor of Optometry & Founder of Gold Soul Optometry

Dr. Edwin Endo founded Gold Soul Optometry with a clear mission: deliver personal, thorough, and genuinely caring eye care to the Permian Basin — the kind of care he believes every patient deserves.

A 2015 graduate of Western University of Health Sciences, Dr. Endo has been practicing optometry for over 10 years, with more than 6 years serving patients right here in West Texas. He is fully licensed in Texas.

Before opening his own practice, Dr. Endo worked in both corporate and independent settings. He saw how insurance-driven schedules and rushed visits often shortchanged patients. That experience inspired him to create a different model — one where the doctor performs the entire exam, takes the time to listen, and puts patient outcomes first.

What sets Dr. Endo apart:

  • Orders as many contact lens trials as needed to find the best possible fit for every patient (spherical, toric, or multifocal)

  • Offers no-charge glasses prescription rechecks for diabetic patients who need new glasses quickly but have fluctuating blood sugar

  • Takes a thoughtful, unhurried approach to every exam — no tech hand-offs or remote readers

Outside the office, Dr. Endo is always working on getting better — whether it’s refining how he runs the practice, training Olympic weightlifting at 1440 Gym, hunting for great Pokémon cards at local card shows, or focusing on philanthropy.

He’s proud to serve the hardworking families of the Permian Basin and is committed to building long-term relationships with his patients.

At Gold Soul Optometry, it’s more than just an eye exam — it’s care with soul.
